Tradition & symbolism

What is the Sri Chakra?

The Sri Chakra, also called the Sri Yantra, is a sacred geometric diagram central to many forms of Sri Vidya worship. It is especially associated with Lalita Tripurasundari, a form of the Divine Mother.

Its interlocking triangles, lotus-petal enclosures, circles, and outer square are traditionally contemplated as interconnected levels of the cosmos and consciousness, converging at the central Bindu.

Sri Adi Shankaracharya & Kanchi Kamakshi

According to the sacred tradition of Kanchipuram, Sri Adi Shankaracharya installed the Sri Chakra at the Kamakshi Amman Temple to pacify the Goddess’s fierce form (Ugra Swarupa), revealing her peaceful and compassionate nature (Shanta Swarupa).

The Sri Chakra continues to hold a central place in the worship of Goddess Kamakshi, symbolizing divine grace, harmony, and spiritual realization.

What is the Maha Meru?

The Maha Meru is a three-dimensional expression of the Sri Chakra. Its ascending tiers present the nine enclosures, or Avaranas, as a sacred form rising toward the Bindu.

The digital model on this site is intended to help visitors appreciate that geometry from different viewpoints. It is an educational visualization, not a substitute for traditional practice or instruction.

A journey inward

The Nine Avaranas

In Sri Vidya tradition, the Sri Chakra is understood through nine successive enclosures. The sequence below follows the model from its outer boundary toward the central Bindu.

01

Bhupura (Trailokya Mohana Chakra)

The outer square enclosure with gateways.

02

Sixteen-petal lotus (Sarvasha Paripuraka Chakra)

The outer lotus enclosure of sixteen petals.

03

Eight-petal lotus (Sarva Sankshobhana Chakra)

The inner lotus enclosure.

04

Fourteen triangles (Sarva Saubhagyadayaka Chakra)

The outermost ring of interlocking triangles.

05

Ten triangles (Sarvartha Sadhaka Chakra)

The next inward triangular enclosure.

06

Ten triangles (Sarva Rakshakara Chakra)

A further inward triangular enclosure.

07

Eight triangles (Sarva Rogahara Chakra)

The innermost ring of surrounding triangles.

08

Central triangle (Sarva Siddhiprada Chakra)

The triangle immediately surrounding the Bindu.

09

Bindu (Sarvanandamaya Chakra)

The central point, symbolizing unity and the ultimate focus of contemplation.
